Ivan Pavlov aka CoH characterizes his latest solo work, Radiant Faults, as “the recording of a dialogue,” rather than a set of compositions. Crafted using a rare new synthesizer, the Silhouette Eins, Pavlov’s first encounter with the instrument across a long, late night session resulted in a continuous set of textures, patterns, and subliminal melodies. At some point during the process, he realized he was not alone: “It was as if something was speaking to me through the gear – the feeling was very intense. No matter how determined and specific I attempted to be, the results were something else. They felt like 'responses.’ This instantly reminded me of ELpH.”
ELpH is the name coined by Coil for a “celestial entity” that emanates from electronic equipment at mysterious moments, altering the creative process in unforeseen ways. They devised the term during studio sessions back in 1994, during which sustained software accidents ultimately seemed possessed of supernatural intelligence, spawning its own mythos. As a longtime member of Coil’s inner circle, Pavlov is steeped in ELpH’s ideology and influence – and highly qualified to identify an encounter of his own. Radiant Faults offers a compelling addition to the ELpH canon, at the threshold of music and manifestation, embracing the “divine quality of error.”
The Silhouette Eins is a unique instrument combining the 1920's concept of an "optical soundtrack" with a hardware synth interface to Pure Data: a visual programming language for producing interactive music, using real- time video signal in its synthesis of sound. Pavlov’s attempted manipulations were answered by indecipherable transmissions from some distant, unknowable place. Stark waveforms drone and bend against skeletal metronomes; murmured pulses flicker down empty corridors; high fluorescent tones gleam and glitch in zero gravity – the mood throughout is one of generative whispers, hidden sentience, and ghosts in the machinery. A post-human terrain of scaffolding, shadows, and semi-conscious circuitry, rippling with veiled energies.
Authorship aside, Pavlov’s process is transformative: “What we perceive as an error or mistake could very well be a message coming through. And while we are not able to decipher the message, sometimes – just like from a crack in a surface, or a tear in fabric – a light unexpectedly seeps through.”

“A good friend of mine told me he's got a new synth, a conceptually new instrument, and invited to give it a try in his studio. I work mostly with computers, and, to be honest, never felt attracted by synthesizers, but this time the notion of "pure data" got me curious and I decided to accept. It took about half an hour to browse through the manual, to get an approximate idea of how the machine functions, and after some additional guidance from my friend, I ended up spending long hours in his studio, feeling completely immersed into a very peculiar dialogue with Silhouette. The sound felt both organic and alien. Most of the instrument responses have been unpredictable, sometimes completely puzzling, impossible to decode, and yet - always coherent an overwhelmingly fascinating.
I remained surrounded by a strange cloud of this initial enchantment for a few weeks after. Out of the 20+ takes recorded that night, more thanhalf were processed, slightly rearranged and enhanced, resulting in a full album [due on Dais Records in October 2023]. “As a drone / experimental music composer, I've always looked for the perfect gear that would express what I have in mind as close as possible and in an intuitive way. I remember, 1 year 1/2 ago, I read a news about
the Silhouette synth which it briefly explained that it was generating and modulating sounds with image sources. For whatever reason, I instinctively though that this synth could be the holy grail I had been looking for for years. I ended up on The Silhouette Synth website and watching the various demos, this instinctive feeling became more and more consistent, to the point where I decided to contact the brilliant guy who had conceived this revolutionary synth.... 10 months later, could not be more excited when the delivery guy handed me a huge and heavy package ! I became one of the happy fews now owning this amazing machine ! Once settled in my home studio, it took me only 2 days to full understand the huge field of sonic possibilities that were now mine ! I started recording live sessions as I do love composing on the go and use as little as possible any post-production / editing tasks. I could not be happier and for sure this synth is definitely my favorite, to the point that I decided to sold some of my other synths and from now on, focus mainly on deep diving into this synth. And Silhouette even quickly overpassed all my expectations. For sure this is a perfect gear for an instinctive approach to sound design or drone composition but it is even more than that ! I would say that I'm not playing the silhouette... The silhouette plays me or, to be more precise, it plays my mind set ! I exchanged a lot with Pit (Silhouette's dad) about upgrade ideas for the next program versions and am even more excited about these future functionalities which will make the Silhouette one of the most amazing synth of all time !!!
